Delhi University considers major changes to Four-Year UG Programme amid low response: Report

The University of Delhi is considering changes to its Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) after receiving a lower-than-expected response from students opting for the fourth year, as reported by The Times of India.

According to the report, the university is exploring a cluster-based model under which only selected colleges would offer fourth-year classes. The proposal aims to make better use of available resources while maintaining academic standards.

Further, the Delhi University Principals’ Association (DUPA) has recommended limiting fourth-year courses to select colleges instead of offering them across all colleges.

CLUSTER MODEL UNDER CONSIDERATION

Delhi University Registrar Vikas Gupta told The Times of India that the university is carefully examining the proposal to ensure efficient use of public resources. He said that running fourth-year classes in every college may not be practical if student enrolment continues to remain low.

The university has clarified that students studying in colleges that do not offer the fourth year would not have to formally transfer. Instead, they would attend classes at the designated cluster college.

FINAL DECISION AFTER ADMISSIONS CONCLUDE

The report also states that in a letter submitted on July 10, DUPA argued that offering fourth-year programmes in every college may not be financially, academically, or administratively sustainable. The association suggested selecting colleges based on factors such as infrastructure, faculty strength, academic resources, and student demand.

University officials have said that a final decision will be taken only after the ongoing admission process is completed and full enrolment data is available. If approved, the cluster-based model would mark the first major revision to the implementation of Delhi University’s flagship Four-Year Undergraduate Programme under the National Education Policy (NEP).
