HONG KONG – Secondary school students in Hong Kong reaped on Wednesday the long-awaited fruits of their years of hard work as the results of the city’s university entrance exams were finally released.
This year, a total of 24 students – 14 males and 10 females – achieved a perfect score in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) exams, eight more compared to last year.Â
Among the 24 top scorers, 11 candidates – six males and five females – were “super top scorers”, as they obtained 5** in the three core subjects (Chinese, English, Mathematics) and three electives, plus the math subject’s extended part, along with a pass in citizenship and social development.
Queen’s College’s super top scorer Ng Ka-wing and top scorer Chiu Yu-him told the media that they plan to study medicine at the University of Hong Kong, while another top scorer Tong Ming-tak hoped to pursue the same academic discipline at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
About 16,000 students will compete for about 13,000 subsidized first-year undergraduate slots via the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS), meaning roughly 1.2 applicants per spot. The admission results will be announced on Aug 5.
