Admission campaign update at Kherson universities: popular specialties and application trends

The admissions campaign to higher education institutions has been going on for almost a week, and the number of applications from applicants changes daily. But already now, having analyzed the open data from the Unified State Electronic Database on Education, the dynamics are clearly visible.

As of 12:00 on July 24, more than 3.4 thousand applications were submitted to the four relocated state universities of the Kherson region. The most were received by Kherson State Agrarian and Economic University — 1080. Applicants submitted 1039 applications to Kherson State Maritime Academy, 688 to Kherson State University, and 676 to Kherson National Technical University. The data are updated several times a day and will be updated until the end of the admissions campaign, so the situation may still change.

Agricultural specialties are again among the most popular

At Kherson State Agrarian and Economic University, applicants show the greatest interest in traditional agricultural fields.

The most applications have so far been submitted for:

  • “Agronomy”;
  • “Geodesy and Land Management”;
  • “Plant Protection and Quarantine”;
  • “Agroengineering”;
  • “Hydrotechnical Construction, Water Engineering and Water Technologies”;
  • “Automobile Transport”.

At the same time, there are competitive offerings for which no applications have been submitted yet or only one or two have been submitted. This mainly concerns certain part-time or tuition-based programs, as well as narrow specializations. For example, as of midday on July 24, there were no applications for one of the part-time agronomy programs.

At Kherson State University, psychology and law attract the most interest

Kherson State University traditionally has the widest range of humanities and pedagogical specialties.

The greatest demand is for:

  • psychology;
  • law;
  • management;
  • computer science;
  • journalism;
  • philology;
  • pedagogical specialties.

At the same time, some narrow educational programs — in particular parts of the natural sciences and humanities — so far have only a few applications.

Kherson National Technical University focuses on IT

At Kherson National Technical University, applicants submit the most applications to modern technical programs.

Among the leaders:

  • “Graphic Design”;
  • “Software Engineering”;
  • “Artificial Intelligence”;
  • “Computer Science”;
  • “Automation and Computer-Integrated Technologies”;
  • “Automobile Transport”.

Some economic and tuition-based programs currently attract less interest, however the situation may still change significantly before the end of the application period.

The Maritime Academy traditionally maintains its positions

Kherson State Maritime Academy, which has been operating in Odesa since the start of the full-scale war, continues to remain one of the region’s most popular educational institutions.

Most applications are traditionally submitted for specialties related to ship navigation, maritime transport, operation of ship power plants and electromechanics.

The campaign is still far from over

Admissions committees say it is too early to draw final conclusions. The acceptance of applications continues, and the EDEBO statistics are updated several times a day. By the end of the admissions campaign, the number of applications may increase significantly and the ranking of certain specialties may change.

However, even now one can identify several trends. Applicants increasingly choose specialties that provide applied skills and higher chances of employment: information technology, engineering, the agricultural sector, transport, psychology and law. At the same time, narrow humanities and certain natural science programs so far enjoy significantly less demand.
