Georgia Tech’s first-year application for undergraduate admission will no longer require the Georgia Tech short-answer question beginning in the 2026-27 application cycle. Students will still be required to complete the Common App personal essay.
This decision comes as the Office of Undergraduate Admission seeks to reduce barriers for prospective students interested in applying to Tech while maintaining a holistic review process.
“Applying to college can be demanding, and we want to do our part to simplify the process as much as we can. As we reflected on the past cycle, it was clear to our team and campus partners that the supplemental essay was no longer a differentiating factor in our decision-making process,” said Mary Tipton Woolley, executive director of Undergraduate Admission. “This change is not intended to make our review process less rigorous, only less complex.”
Admission staff will continue to use a holistic review process to evaluate applicants. Among the factors considered are students’ engagement in their school communities, their potential fit for Georgia Tech, and their selected majors. This process aims to enroll students from varied backgrounds who show strong alignment with Tech’s mission to develop leaders who advance technology and improve the human condition.
Georgia Tech joins other leading public universities, including the University of Georgia, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the University of Virginia, that have recently eliminated supplemental essays, reflecting broader changes in the college admission landscape.
“Our goal is to make applying to Tech for admission, financial aid, and scholarships as straightforward as possible for students from across Georgia and beyond,” said Rick Clark, vice provost for Enrollment Management. “Each year we evaluate how to best provide students and families with clarity and expand our talent pipeline. Eliminating our supplemental essay, particularly in concert with other strong southern public universities, is a good example of this effort. This is a pivotal time for innovation and disruption in higher education broadly and that starts with applying to college, so I am hopeful that schools across the country will continue to examine how to make the student experience simple, logical, and transparent.”
Application Opens Aug. 1
The first-year undergraduate application to join Tech for Fall 2027 will open on Aug. 1, accessible via the Common App website.
Along with the personal essay, applicants will also be required to submit a high school transcript, standardized test scores, and a summary of activities in which the applicant is involved (their contribution to community). Applicants may also submit letters of recommendation from their counselor and teacher.
Last year, a record number of nearly 68,000 students applied for first-year admission to Tech. Applicants hailed from 136 counties in the state of Georgia, all 50 states (plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico), and 97 nations.
