WASHINGTON (7News) — Maryland is offering expedited admissions assistance and an $800 credit to students who were disenrolled by Howard University in D.C. and are looking for another college option this fall.
Gov. Wes Moore said on Thursday that affected students can seek expedited late-admission reviews at participating University System of Maryland schools with available space.
Students who enroll at a participating college will get $800 credit to help offset nonrefundable enrollment and housing deposits they previously paid to Howard.

“These students worked hard, earned admission to college, and were preparing to begin the next chapter of their lives,” Moore said. “Maryland is moving with urgency to give them a clear path forward.”
The Maryland Higher Education Commission and University Systems of Maryland will work together to help students identify available academic programs, navigate financial aid, and complete the admissions process.
Affected students are encouraged to contact the commission’s Office of Student Financial Assistance (OFSA) at osfamail.mhec@maryland.gov for personalized guidance.

Howard previously notified 502 incoming students that they had been dropped after their accounts did not reflect required payments or financial documents by the university’s deadlines.
Students and parents told 7News they had a hard time reaching university offices while waiting for loans, scholarships, and other outside funding to be applied to their accounts.
Howard later started reviewing the students’ cases individually and said a considerable number had met the requirements and been reinstated. Several students who spoke with 7News have since had their enrollment restored.
However, Howard officials had said not all 502 students will be reenrolled. The university said it would explore deferred enrollment for students who are not reinstated.
University System of Maryland Chancellor Jay Perman said the system wants to help affected students continue their education with as little interruption as possible.
