Many unable to participate in inter-college competitions, varsity yet to form Sports Quota Admission panel: Cong

Over 120 aspiring student-athletes seeking admission under the sports quota in Gujarat University-affiliated colleges have been left in limbo as they await the conclusion of the admission process, even as inter-college sports competitions are underway.
According to Subhan Saiyed, spokesperson of Gujarat State Youth Congress, while admissions under the Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS) have progressed in other universities, sports-quota admissions at GU are pending. He also claimed that the university is yet to constitute its Sports Quota Admission Committee.
In a memorandum, the party raised concerns about the delay’s impact on students who rely on the sports quota for higher education opportunities. With inter-college tournaments already underway, many eligible athletes are reportedly unable to participate because their admissions are yet to be finalised.
The Youth Congress has alleged that GU is among the few institutions where the sports-quota admission process has not been completed. It further stated that several talented athletes may have opted for admission in other universities due to the uncertainty. It argued that timely support for student-athletes is essential if the state aims to strengthen its sporting ecosystem. The memorandum has urged the university administration to immediately constitute the panel.
Jagdish Joshi, in-charge VC, however, said that the varsity has formed the committee, but a decision related to the admission process is yet to be taken. “The committee is likely to meet on Friday, and further analysis on a decision about the sports quota admission will be taken in the next couple of days,” he said.AM
