UGC has identified 32 fake universities across India and warned students not to take admission there. Authorities have been asked to take legal action and shut down these institutions.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has identified 32 fake universities across India and warned students not to take admission in these institutions. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on August 5, Minister of State for Education Dr. Sukanta Majumdar said the UGC has issued warning notices, show-cause notices, compliance letters, and clarification notices to these institutions for operating without approval.
The UGC has also published public notices on its official website to make students and parents aware of these fake universities. Along with this, the commission has written to the Chief Secretaries and Education Secretaries of the concerned States and Union Territories, asking them to take strict action, including filing FIRs against institutions violating the UGC Act, 1956.
The Central Government has also directed State Governments and Union Territories to take legal action to shut down these fake institutions. Authorities have been asked to stop them from misleading students by calling themselves universities, awarding invalid degrees, and using the word “university” in their names.
“They were also requested to inform the Central Government/UGC of any other fake universities functioning in their States/UTs that are not included in the UGC’s list of fake universities,” according to the Press Information Bureau.
