While chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami pushed to promote a deeper understanding of Sanatan tradition by announcing a Centre for Hindu Studies at Doon University, the university is facing challenges with fewer admission applications received in the course for the second consecutive year.
Dhami had announced that the Centre for Hindu Studies would be established at Doon University to offer academic research opportunities focused on Hindu civilisation, philosophy and cultural heritage. Following this announcement, the university began a MA programme in Hindu Studies in 2025. However, in its inaugural year, only seven out of 20 seats were filled.
This year, the university reopened admissions for the course with a deadline of July 31. However, due to a low number of applications, the admission date has now been extended.
The dean of Students Welfare and the coordinator of the Centre for Hindu Studies, HC Purohit informed that the online admission registration process for candidates wanting to enroll in the MA in Hindu Studies began recently. Initially, it was decided that the admission registration process would conclude on July 31. This year, 20 seats have been allocated for the Hindu Studies programme.
Due to the low number of applications and the fact that many BA graduation results have yet to be declared, the university has extended the admission deadline to August 17. Purohit said that last year, only seven out of the 20 available seats were filled. He attributed the low awareness of the programme to the fewer applications received and the limited number of filled seats.
The selection for these seats will be merit-based, according to candidates’ graduation marks. The eligibility requirement to enroll in this course is the completion of any graduate programme.
The course spans two years and consists of four semesters, covering various subjects, including the Vedas, Mahabharata Ramayana and other historical texts. This curriculum aims to equip students with the knowledge to explain the significance of Bharat Darshan and how human life can be improved through this understanding, he said.
