Gujarat University’s invitation for applications under the 2 per cent supernumerary sports quota for undergraduate courses has drawn criticism from the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), which alleged that the admissions process has been launched too late in the academic cycle. NSUI claimed many aspiring sportspersons had already opted for private universities after waiting for Gujarat University to announce admissions.

The student body also criticised the requirement for candidates to register online through the Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS) portal while submitting documents offline, and objected to the exclusion of the LLB programme from the list of courses covered under the sports quota.

As per the university notification, candidates applying under the sports, cultural, NCC, NSS, Para-Olympic, Ex-Serviceman and In-Service Man categories must register on the GCAS portal and submit their applications and documents at the Gujarat University Admission Committee (GUAC) office by July 28. Eligible candidates must have secured first, second or third positions in university sports or cultural competitions. Cricket applicants under the Under-16 and Under-19 categories must have participated in BCCI-recognised tournaments, while NCC, NSS and Ex-Serviceman applicants are also required to furnish specified certificates. NSUI leaders Chirag Darji and Subhan Saiyed said the delay had forced several talented athletes to seek admission elsewhere and urged the university to begin sports quota admissions at the start of the admission cycle.
