Trichy: Trichy: Concerned over the large number of vacant seats in colleges, a retired professor of Bharathidasan University has proposed a a single-window admission system through schools, aimed at streamlining college admissions.On June 26, Association of University Teachers (AUT) submitted a representation to the higher education department urging the govt to implement this system, named Udhayam higher education scheme. According to the scheme proposed by S Parthasarathy, retired professor of bioinformatics, class XII students should be allowed to register online for college admissions through their schools on the day the examination results are out. He said students are often left to navigate the college admission process on their own after class XII. “This often leads to rural students missing admission deadlines due to lack of awareness, financial constraints and burden of applying separately to multiple institutions,” he said. Colleges in rural areas account for the most number of vacant seats.The association said the proposal had earlier been submitted to the then higher education minister and was included in the DMK election manifesto. Under it, a dedicated portal would integrate students’ academic records with details of courses, seat availability and reservation categories across colleges and universities. Students could submit a single online application, rank their preferred institutions and courses, and secure admissions through multiple rounds of centralised counselling based on merit and preference. According to him, the system would reduce dropouts, improve access for rural and tribal students, and help fill vacant seats in higher educational institutions across the state.
