Tamil Nadu’s Pranav Ilango will study Applied Mathematics and Public Health at the prestigious Brown University in the United States
A 17-year-old student from Erode, Tamil Nadu, has secured admission to the prestigious Brown University in the United States with a full four-year undergraduate scholarship worth Rs 3.55 crore ($420,000), taking a route that did not involve India’s conventional engineering or medical entrance exams.
Pranav Ilango, a student of CS Academy in Erode, will join the Ivy League university for the 2026–30 academic session. He plans to study Applied Mathematics and Public Health, combining his interest in quantitative problem-solving with his focus on healthcare and social issues.
The scholarship will cover his tuition fees, accommodation and living expenses for the entire four-year undergraduate programme.
An alternative to the JEE-Neet route
While millions of Indian students prepare for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) or the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) to enter engineering and medical colleges, Pranav began building an international academic profile at a relatively young age.
At 13, he enrolled in the National Scholar Development Program run by Dexterity Global. Over the following years, he developed an academic portfolio focused not just on examination performance but also on mathematics, computer science and real-world applications of technology.

Pranav also worked on projects examining how artificial intelligence, data science and mathematical modelling could be used to address challenges in healthcare and society.
Combining math, AI and public health
At Brown, Pranav plans to bring together his interests in mathematics and healthcare. His academic focus will include exploring how data analytics, artificial intelligence and mathematical modelling can be used to tackle public health challenges.
His longer-term goal is to build a public-health technology venture that can provide useful health data and resources to governments and communities in underserved areas.
Brown’s flexible Open Curriculum will allow him to explore these interests across disciplines while studying at the university’s research-focused campus in Providence, Rhode Island.
Brown University is one of the eight private universities that make up the Ivy League in the US. The university provides financial aid based on demonstrated need, with institutional grants helping eligible students meet the cost of their education.
For Pranav, the four-year scholarship means the cost of tuition, accommodation and living expenses will be covered throughout his undergraduate education.
