The University of Delhi (DU) has allowed two of its constituent colleges — Aditi Mahavidyalaya and Bhagini Nivedita College — to conduct offline, merit-based undergraduate admissions to fill seats that remain vacant after several rounds of the CUET-driven admission process.
The approval is an exception to DU’s existing admission framework, where undergraduate admissions are normally carried out through the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) using CUET UG scores.
ADMISSION OPEN FOR BCOM, BA, BSC AND OTHER PROGRAMMES
In a public notice issued on August 1, Bhagini Nivedita College announced offline applications for merit-based admission to a range of undergraduate programmes, including BCom, BA, BSc and several other courses.
According to the notice, candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of their Class 12 marks, subject to seat availability. The last date to submit applications is August 5, while document verification and fee payment will take place on August 6 and 7.
College officials said the university approved the request after repeated rounds of CSAS counselling over the past few years failed to fill all available undergraduate seats.
Representatives from both colleges said their campuses have continued to face low enrolment because of their location as well as the smaller applicant base for women’s colleges.
Bhagini Nivedita College said a significant number of seats remained unfilled even after multiple rounds of CUET-based counselling, leading the institution to request permission for admissions based on Class 12 merit.
Aditi Mahavidyalaya, located in Bawana, said nearly 40 per cent of its undergraduate seats have remained vacant in recent admission cycles conducted through CUET.
The college noted that many girls from surrounding rural areas do not appear for CUET, largely because their families are reluctant to send them to study far from home. As a result, several students with strong Class 12 scores are unable to secure admission.
Officials emphasised that CUET will continue to be the university’s primary admission route, adding that the offline merit-based process is only a one-time measure to fill seats left vacant after the regular counselling rounds.
The decision has, however, sparked objections from the Indian National Teachers Congress (INTEC), which argued that DU should implement a uniform policy for filling vacant undergraduate seats across all colleges rather than granting special permission to just two institutions. The teachers’ body has also written to the vice-chancellor, calling for a common and transparent admission mechanism.
