The admission process for postgraduate (PG) courses at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has been completed. A total of 356 seats remained vacant till the final stage of admission on the main campus as well as affiliated colleges.
Of these, 52 candidates’ applications were rejected due to incomplete applications or errors found in certificates, while 304 candidates did not take admission despite being allotted seats.
According to the university, students left their seats due to several reasons such as not getting the desired subject or branch, getting admission in another center, and taking admission in an institution closer to home.
BHU conducted the admission process for approximately 150 PG courses running across 13 faculties this year by dividing them into general and practical-based courses. The university completed the admission process in a phased manner.
Four general admission rounds were conducted for 123 general courses, while two admission rounds were held for 27 practical-based courses.
After this, two spot rounds were organized to fill vacant seats, and finally, a mop-up round was also conducted.
Departmental reporting completed by 28 July
After completion of all admission phases, the university administration completed the physical reporting of all selected candidates in departments by 28 July. Following this, classes for the new session were started from 30 July.
During physical reporting, the number of candidates whose admission was cancelled for some reason or another, or who did not take admission in the allotted seat, came to light. These seats are now considered vacant.
BHU Central Admission Committee Coordinator Prof. Bhaskar Bhattacharya informed that during various rounds of seat allotment, candidates are also given the opportunity to cancel their seats. If a candidate does not want to take admission on the allotted seat or leaves their seat, then in the next phase that seat is allotted to another eligible candidate.
He explained that candidates may have different reasons for leaving seats. Sometimes, they don’t get their desired subject or branch, while some candidates take admission in another center or institution. Meanwhile, some students give priority to admission in a university or college near their home.
Maximum students from General category left their seats
According to the data, out of 356 candidates who did not take admission in BHU, the highest number of 157 are from the General category.
Apart from this, 52 candidates from the OBC category and 40 candidates from the SC category also did not take admission in the allotted seats.
Meanwhile, 22-22 candidates each from the ST and EWS categories left their seats. 15 candidates from the Divyang (Disabled) category also did not take admission.
Apart from this, the remaining candidates belong to various other quotas and categories implemented in the university, including BHU Ward. The university administration had made arrangements to allot vacant seats to eligible candidates in the next round at all stages of the admission process.
Full amount will be refunded if admission is not taken after depositing fees
There is also a provision for fee refund under BHU’s admission rules. Those candidates who had deposited fees during the admission process, but later did not take admission on the allotted seat for some reason, will be refunded the full fee as per rules.
According to the university administration, the fee refund process for candidates who vacate seats will be initiated after the completion of the PG admission process for the current academic session.
This means that students who deposited fees but did not take admission in BHU will have a clear path to get their entire deposited fee refunded as per rules.
